Valuing Parenting: Thriving as a Family with a Child or Young Person with Needs
Parenting is a journey filled with joy, challenges and growth. When raising a child or young person who needs additional support, this journey often requires extra patience, understanding and resilience. However, I have written this blog as a reflection and to explore the importance of valuing ‘you’ as a parent and the practical things to consider around your role. We often hear that Parent Carers feel overwhelmed navigating the system. My experience would mirror that sense of overwhelm. I have felt frustrated and confused about the system while needing to allow my children to be their authentic selves within our family and home and build a strong and respectful relationship, full of honesty and safety and built to last.
This blog is about valuing parenting alongside the other commitments that go with being a Parent Carer.
Embracing the Unique Journey
Every child is unique and embracing this individuality is the foundation of a strong, thriving family. Recognising and celebrating your child’s strengths, rather than focusing solely on their challenges can foster a positive and empowering environment. Shift your perspective to appreciate the small victories, building confidence and your family connection.
The Power of Connection and Communication
Effective communication is vital in any family, but it becomes even more essential when supporting a child with additional needs. Open and honest conversations allow for deeper understanding and emotional support. Actively listening to your child and acknowledging their feelings builds trust and strengthens your relationship.
Additionally, clear communication amongst family members helps create a supportive network. Siblings and extended family should be encouraged to express their thoughts and concerns so everyone feels heard and valued.
Building a Supportive Community
No parent should have to navigate this journey alone. Seeking out a support system through family, friends, or local community groups and organisations provides encouragement and practical help. Connecting with other families with similar experiences can offer valuable insights, shared resources, and a sense of belonging.
Many organisations and online communities are also dedicated to supporting families with children with additional needs. Exploring these resources can lead to guidance and social opportunities for a family.
Prioritising Self-Care
Parent Carers often place their children’s needs above their own; but self-care is crucial for long-term well-being. Taking time to recharge, whether through exercise, hobbies, or socialising, ensures you can provide the best possible care for your child. Remember, self-care is not selfish but an investment in your ability to be a strong and present parent. Please remember that Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum is an established Healthy Parent Carer programme facilitator.
Advocacy and Empowerment
Advocating for your child’s needs within educational, medical and social settings can empower you and your child. Being informed about available services and legal rights helps you make the best decisions for your family. Encouraging your child to self-advocate, where appropriate, also prepares them for independence.
Cultivating a Positive Family Dynamic
A thriving family environment is built on love, patience and adaptability. Encourage family bonding through shared activities, traditions, and quality time. Celebrate achievements, big or small and build a sense of teamwork within the household. Remember, the goal is not perfection but rather progress and empowering everyone to thrive.
Enjoying Family Time and Doing Things Your Way
Every family has unique routines and ways of doing things, and embracing what works best for you is key to enjoying time together. Instead of trying to fit into societal expectations, focus on activities that bring joy and relaxation to your family. Whether it’s a quiet movie night, a nature walk, a creative project, or baking a cake, prioritise experiences that allow connection and happiness. Don't worry about what others do.
Let go of external pressures and comparisons. There is no "one right way" to enjoy family time. Be flexible, experiment with different activities and, most importantly, have fun. Focusing on what brings your family joy creates cherished memories and strengthens your bonds.
The Outcomes of Valuing Parenting and Building Relationships
When parenting is valued, and relationships are nurtured, families experience a range of positive outcomes. Strong family bonds create a sense of security and belonging, helping children and young people develop confidence and emotional strength.
Meaningful interactions and shared experiences strengthen trust and understanding amongst family members.
Prioritising relationship building creates a supportive environment where children feel loved, heard and encouraged to reach their potential. This enhances a child’s well-being and promotes a culture of empathy and mutual respect within the family. Ultimately, valuing parenting and investing in relationships leads to a more joyful, connected, and thriving family life.
Final Thoughts

Valuing parenting means recognising the immense effort and love that goes into raising a child, especially one with additional needs. Families can create an environment where everyone thrives by understanding their connection, seeking support, practising self-care and advocating for their child. Parenthood is a profound journey; it can be filled with growth, strength, and joy, whilst understanding it has many ups and downs.
Remember, small steps matter!
